Why Do Men Hate Going to Church?

It's Sunday morning.

Where are all the men?

Sleeping? Playing golf? Watching TV? Leisurely reading the newspaper?

One place you won't find them is in church.

Church attendance nationwide shows that for every 100 adults who attend church, only 40 are men. Men are staying away from church in large numbers.

Why? What happens in church that keeps men away?

That is what our church leaders want to know. And that is why Jim and I have been reading on this subject lately, and why we’re preparing three messages for a new series that begins this Sunday February 19. The title of the series: “Why Men Hate Going to Church.”

At PTCC, we’re determined to reach men for Jesus Christ. Why?

  1. Because Jesus was a man. A male. A guy. Yes, he was God’s Son … but humanly speaking he belonged to the masculine gender. That seems to get lost in our culture, where gender differences have been minimized and masculinity has been demonized. Pity. Jesus was fully a male. How is it that 21st century men don’t connect with a man like Jesus?
  1. Because Jesus’ initial followers were males. In fact they were men’s men – fishermen, businessmen, political revolutionaries. Rough speaking, tough acting, wanting to make their mark in life. Eleven out of twelve voluntarily sacrificed their lives to tell his story to others.  How is it that 21st century men don’t connect with gutsy guys like Jesus’ followers?
  1. Because men need Jesus to be all that God created them to be. Apart from Christ, men follow the wrong heroes – athletes or gangsters or tycoons. But once a man realizes that Jesus is the ultimate hero who died for them and now lives for them, they become capable of living the life they’ve always dreamed about. A life of adventure and risk and high-stakes commitment. How is it that 21st century men don’t see their need for Jesus?

If you’ve ever felt that church was too tame or boring or irrelevant, I dare you to come to our Sunday services for the next three weeks. You will hear manly music (lots of drums!), meaningful messages, and much more. And if you know any men who hate church, forward this email to them and invite them to join you for these three Sundays. They may just change their minds!

See you Sunday,

Paul Basden
Senior Pastor
