Time Change, Spring Break, and Compassion

It’s time change weekend, so here’s the reminder you may be waiting for – set your clocks ahead one hour before you go to bed Saturday night. Daylight savings time means that the days will be longer, which in turn is a reminder that Spring is here and the weather will be enjoyable for most of the next two months. (How’s that for optimism?!)

This year, time change weekend kicks off Frisco’s spring break. Ditto for McKinney.  Due to the exodus of many families for vacations or family getaways, PTCC has made some scheduling adjustments. The three biggies are:

  1. Women’s Ministry Bible Studies will NOT meet on Tuesday March 13.

  2. Men’s Ministry Bible Studies will NOT meet on March 14 or 16.

  3. Incite Life Groups will NOT meet on Wednesday March 14.

But we still have great services planned for both Sunday March 11 and March 18. This Sunday the 11th, Jim will speak on “Gluttony,” the fourth of the seven deadly sins that we’ve been looking at recently. I don’t want to give away the surprise video, but let’s just say that you’ve never seen anything like this before! And on the 18th we will delve into that deadly sin called “Greed.” BTW, our worship planning team is gratified that so many of you have expressed thanks for this “dis-integrate” series – the messages, the songs, the creative elements, the stage set-up, etc. Our hope is that every Sunday is a day when you can invite your unchurched friends to come with you, fully confident that what is planned for that day will benefit both of you.

One last thing – and this is a cause for celebration and prayer. During Spring Break we will be sending out two teams from PTCC to show God’s compassion to people in destitute circumstances. Here’s the lineup:

  1. Our Student Ministry is leading a trip to Nuevo Laredo, Mexico March 10-14. Twenty-five teenagers and twelve adults will be serving in an orphanage where the children are impoverished. Assisting around the orphanage with daily chores, helping to improve the facility, and loving on kids will be the primary ways these servants will be showing the love of Christ to orphans. Pray for safe travel, team unity, daily flexibility, and a deep love for these children that will translate into many acts of mercy and compassion.

  2. Six folks from the PTCC family are heading to Aceh, Indonesia to continue the work of Compassion Frisco, responding to the devastating earthquake and tsunami that ravaged that region 27 months ago. Half of the group will be returning; the other half will be making their first trip. Their job is clear – to rebuild community and restore hope in a land that could easily lose both. Teaching English, computer skills, and cooking skills to adults, and playing games with children will be how this team demonstrates Christ’s compassion. Pray for safe travel (it’s a long trip!), understanding of Muslim culture, and love for the Acehnese that will make them want to know why we came to help.

God is truly doing some great things in our church … in north Texas … and around the world. “May your Kingdom come on earth, as it is in heaven.”

Prayerfully,

Paul Basden, senior pastor

Dis • integrate - Seven things that rip your life apart.

At Preston Trail we have a saying, “We take grace and sin seriously.”  We understand and rely on God’s gracious, forgiving nature and Jesus’ saving work for us on the cross.  No person is too sinful to be forgiven, too broken to be healed, or too lost to be found by God’s gracious love.  At Preston Trail “grace abounds”, as the Apostle Paul would say.

We also take sin seriously.  Sin is more than just little slip-ups or cases of “bad judgment.”  Sin, plainly spoken, is rebellion against God and the way he wired both us and creation.  It is deciding we know more about creation and how to live in it than the Creator.  So we go our own way, flippin’ the bird at the one who created flight.  Not smart.  As one insightful writer has concluded, “We break God’s laws at our own peril.”  So in our “infinite” wisdom we human beings have ushered into the world just about all the lying, murder, raping, injustice, abusing, warring, gossiping, stealing, slandering, and hoarding we can stand.

We take sin seriously because we know first hand that it has the power to separate us from God, break us, wreck our families, spoil our reputations, drain our bank accounts, harm our children.  Sin, literally can rip our lives apart.  That’s why Paul and I are going to take the next 7 weeks to talk very candidly about some “deadly sins.” We will focus both on how they infiltrate our lives and generate pain and brokenness as well as how to overcome them with God’s help.  Christians through the centuries have identified pride, lust, anger, gluttony, greed, laziness, and envy as particularly insidious and chronic.  They just have a way of continually slipping in through the cracks in our souls to wreak havoc with our relationships with God, our selves, and others.

Dis•Integrate: Seven Sins That Rip Your Life Apart   Here’s the lineup for this new series:

2/18  Pride
2/25   Lust
3/4    Anger
3/11  Gluttony
3/18  Greed
3/25  Laziness
4/1    Envy
