Building Updates … and Building as a Ministry Tool

Lots of great things are happening in relation to our building these days. Here is a short list:

  1. Saturday Workdays have been super-successful! We’ve had 15-20 people there every week, and you wouldn’t believe how much demolition can be accomplished by a bunch of crazy people! Join us any Saturday you can. We’re there from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM. Donuts, coffee, water, pizza, and cold drinks are free.
  2. We will have a Building Tour and Bond Information Meeting on March 26 and 27. (See this Sunday’s program for details on time.) It will be a great opportunity to do two things. First you can see the inside of our new building – the floor plan, the architectural renderings of the final product, and the rooms where we will worship and teach kids and minister to students and guide preschoolers and all the rest! Then you can learn how to participate in our bond offering if you want to. While Dream Big! involved giving money for the new building, the bond program involves temporarily moving money from your current investments (IRA, 401k, etc.) into a church bond for a set period of time at a guaranteed rate of return. Many investors like church bonds because they are safe and can be either short-term or long-term. Find out more at these meetings.
  3. The space allocations of the new building have exciting implications for ministry next Fall, including children’s ministry. To explain this more fully, Jim and I are joining Lisa Lloyd and Jeri Taylor to host a meeting of all parents of children fifth grade and younger this Sunday, March 19 at 4 PM at the Taylor’s old home on 7943 Raintree Way. We hope every family with children can have at least one parent in attendance.

One thing we must remember and never forget is that this building is a tool for ministry … it is not the ultimate goal of our church. We don’t want to develop an “edifice complex.” Buildings are valuable only to the extent that they serve the purpose of the organization using them. Our church exists to help people find and follow Jesus Christ. That purpose provides the litmus test for how we will use the building – and reminds us that it is a tool for ministry, nothing more.

Believe me, nobody wants a building more than Jim and I do! But all of us must keep in the front of our minds that the church is people … that God has called us to reach people … that Jesus came to earth to suffer and die for people … and that we will be most faithful to God when we use our new building to minister to people. I really believe that!

And I am excited to see how God will bless us as we use our new ministry tool …

Paul Basden, senior pastor
