GOOGLE “Prayer”
What on earth did we do before there was GOOGLE? Paul
and I are beginning a new message series this week on prayer
entitled Nuts
and Bolts: How Prayer Really Works. So, I thought
I’d do a little research by googling “prayer.” Wow! 118
million links to prayer. That’s a lot! If you
spent just one minute looking at each link it would take you 224
years and six months! I don’t know about you, but I
don’t have that kind of time.
And the links, well they are all over the
place. You can
discover all kinds of things about prayer. There’s
sacredspace.ie a website hosted by Irish Jesuit priests (they have
a ten minute guided prayer time that is very good); liveprayer.com that promises miracles 24 hours a day; the7greatprayers.com where
you can learn the 7 great prayers for lasting financial success;
and my personal favorite, prayergym.com where you can exercise
your prayer muscles (give this one a try!)
As I have done my cursory research I’ve determined two things.
Almost everyone does it. And people pray anytime and anywhere:
in church, at home, at school, at the office, in foxholes, in Congress,
in monasteries, on assembly lines, in boardrooms, in airplanes,
on golf courses, at home plate, in the end zone, while running,
cleaning house, in small groups, in locker rooms, on movie sets,
in examination rooms, before meals, after making love, in the morning,
at noon, and at bedtime. I think you catch my drift.
Second, no matter how long someone has been
at prayer, they almost always still feel like a beginner. There’s good reason
for that. When you consider the magnitude and majesty of
God, in comparison to our finite hearts and minds, we are infinitesimally
minuscule. To comprehend, then, just one ounce of the power
and personhood of God would be a miracle of epic proportion. Therefore,
we never grow too old, too mature, or too spiritual to learn again
the basic fundamental elements of prayer.
So . . . Nuts and Bolts is
going to be a message series for everyone, whether you are a
beginner or a long time pray-er. Here’s the lineup of topics. I hope
you won’t miss a one and that you will bring a handful of
friends with you to hear these life-changing truths:
June 4: What It Is and Isn’t
June 11: Prayer Changes Things
June 18: Find Your Rhythm
June 25: Unanswered Prayer
July 02: Prayer Busters
Don’t forget we are in our summer schedule. Everything
starts at 10:00 AM. We look forward to seeing you Sunday
and experiencing God in a powerful and transforming way!
Expectantly,
Jim
