A Lunch and a Smile

“Do you want to know what my name is?” the little girl asked me. “Of course I do!” I responded. And Taylor continued to tell me about her little 4-year old self, her four brothers, her sister, her school and how happy she was that she had “chips and pink juice” that day. Happy she was. Happy was I.

This was just one of many wonderful encounters I was fortunate enough to experience this past week during the PTCC/Frisco Family Services (FFS) Lunch Program. Led by Christine Ortega and Jeri and John Taylor, PTCC volunteers not only served lunch to children living in an apartment complex in Frisco, but made a meaningful impact in their lives by sharing the love of Christ with them in very tangible ways. Each day, after eating a brown bag lunch prepared by PTCC volunteers, about 80-100 children participated in kickball, chalk coloring, parachute fun and other games. They got to board a real live fire truck courtesy of the Frisco Fire Department. Prizes of books, balls and other toys were raffled off. At the end of the week, a bicycle was given to a child.

“I felt like a day camp was brought to them," wrote FFS Director Nicole Bursey in her email to Christine. “Had it not been for our partnering together, many of the children at the apartment complex may have not had lunch.”

Several of the smiling faces Preston Trail Community Church volunteers encountered during the FFS Summer Lunch Program this week

It was a great week to be part of the Preston Trail Family and in the family of God. God’s love and joy were abundant and visible in the apartment complex. Which led me to ask myself, “Why does God show his face so clearly during a week like this?” Scripture points us to some answers in Matthew chapter 25, where Jesus told his disciples “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink.” The message is clear: when we help those in need, we are in the center of God’s will, and he uses the smiles on the faces of little children (and the volunteers serving them) to give us a glimpse into his joy in those moments.

For those of you who didn’t get the chance to participate, you can still make a difference today! Over the next three Sundays in June, we will be collecting hygiene and cleaning products to help restock the FFS food bank. A table will be setup in our main atrium before and after our worship services. Items needed include:

HYGIENE
Shampoo & Conditioner
Soap
Lotion
Toothpaste
Sanitary Napkins
CLEANING
Laundry Detergent
Dishwashing Liquid
Fantastic/409 Cleaner
Windex
Disinfectants – Lysol, Pinesol

So bring your bag soon and participate in making someone happy. And we will get to spread a little piece of God to everyone.

Thankful Taylor introduced herself,

Old School

Given the ever increasing expectations being placed on children these
days, it’s no wonder parenting is quickly becoming a competitive sport!
Travel teams, individual coaches, special tutors, music lessons and a
multitude of summer camps are all now a part of the average family’s
weekly schedule. This modern approach to raising a family raises a
couple of questions, however. Is this really healthy for our kids? What
are we raising them to become? In a new message series entitled Old
School: A Retro Look at Parenting, Jim Johnson is going to reintroduce
us to some of the time tested biblical principles that parents have used
through the ages to raise spiritual champions!
