“Complimenting the Pastor’s
Message”
I heard about a woman who decided one Sunday
to compliment her pastor after he had delivered a good message.
She shook his hand firmly, looked him straight in the eyes and
proclaimed, “Pastor,
every sermon you preach is better than the next one.” Hmmm.
I hope she meant to say “last” rather than “next.”
Reminds me of another woman who also tried
to compliment her pastor’s
message. After the service she told him, “Pastor, you’ll
never know how much your sermons have meant to my husband since
he lost his mind.” Again, not exactly a compliment.
What is an appropriate compliment to give your pastor after a
good sermon?
Jim and I have heard “Good sermon” numerous times
over the years. Same with “That really meant a lot to me.” But
no compliment means more than when someone says, “I made
a positive change in my life because of something you said in a
message.” That’s the greatest thing we could ever hear – and
that’s because we believe that the goal of all preaching
is life-change. As the old evangelist D.L. Moody used to say, “The
Bible was not given to increase your knowledge, but to change your
life!”
One part of the PTCC Vision statement says, “We envision
a Bible-centered church, where gifted and anointed teachers explain
and apply the Bible for everyday living.” And the Bible verse
that serves as our benchmark is Colossians 1:28, which says, “We
proclaim Christ, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom,
so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.” That’s
a lofty goal for a biblical message, but it’s worthy of our
time and energy and even sacrifice.
Last week someone told me that they were out
of town for a few days because they needed to go visit a family
member and “say
some things I needed to say.” I smiled, because I remember
very clearly that Jim challenged all of us to do that in one of
his messages a few months ago. This person made a positive change
in her life because of something God said to her through a Sunday
sermon. Interestingly, that’s what we pray for every week
as we prepare our messages and as we deliver them on Sundays.
The current series on “Nuts and Bolts of Prayer” will
give you plenty of opportunities to examine your life of personal
conversation with God. Each week as you listen to the message ask
God to show you something you can do that would bring a positive
change into your life. Then when you hear what He wants you to
do, resolve to apply it to your everyday living immediately.
If you do that, it will be the single best compliment you could
ever give to your pastors. And it will be the single best way you
can thank God for His grace and patience and love toward you.
I’m truly thankful to be a teacher at PTCC. It’s
a privilege.
God bless you,
Paul Basden, senior pastor
