Dad's Day

Don’t forget!  This Sunday is Father’s Day.  Unfortunately the axiom we joke about around our house (When momma’s not happy, nobody’s happy, but when daddy’s not happy, who cares?) has a small ring of truth to it.  That is, according to a group of surveys highlighted in a recent Newsweek article.  It seems that half of America can’t remember when Father’s Day is.  Ouch!  Dads are undaunted because 51% of them say they would like a flat panel TV for their gift this year.  The sad truth is, though, that of the 50% who even know when Father’s Day is, 69% of those are opting to just give their dads a card. (Well yippee for Hallmark!)  And what’s more, when it comes to Mother’s Day, givers spend an average of $122.16.  Fathers don’t fare as well.  The average gift to dads this season will cost $88.88.

As I reflect on these statistics I would like to draw just a couple of conclusions.  First, if I have to choose between going through childbirth and getting slighted on my special day, I’ll take the Hallmark route every time! (Thanks, Honey, you were a real trooper with our boys, especially on that C-Section when the anesthesia didn’t work)

Second, I’d like to offer a little encouragement for fathers and the ones who love and often have to put up with them.  Father’s are taking it on the chin a lot these days for spending too much time at work and thus being absent and sometimes neglectful.  We could go into a lot of reasons for this reality, chastise dads once again, or just plain give up on them and expect things to never to change for the better.  Or, we could try a little experiment.  Here’s the hypothesis (you always need one of those if you are going to do an experiment).  People tend to gravitate to those places and people where they feel appreciated and valued.

So for the next couple of weeks try things like these.  Moms fix your husband’s favorite meal a couple of times.  Encourage him to unwind on the recliner for thirty minutes or so when he gets home from work.  Put a “round of golf” at the top of your Honey Do List.  Kids, greet your dad with a big bear hug when he walks through the door after work and tell him how much you missed him.  Make him a card out of construction paper and materials you have at home.  He always needs more artwork to put on his desk at work.  Surprise him with a clean room.  These are simple, yet powerfully attracting things to a dad.  Before you know it you may find that he is spending less time at work and more time at home with you.

Another way you can make your dad feel special is to bring him to the Father’s Day Picnic at Warren Sports Complex this Sunday, June 18, from 6:00-dark.  We’ll have fried chicken and sweet tea for everyone.  Bring another side dish with the fixin’s of your choice.  We’ll have a bounce house, a dunk tank for dads, and some special games for the whole family.  It will be an awesome way to spend time with those who love you most!

Don’t forget Sunday morning either.  We continue our message series entitled Nuts and Bolts: How Prayer Really Works.  Paul is going to talk about how we can “find our rhythm” and enhance the value and meaning of our times with God in prayer.  You all have responded so well to this series.  Our growth was up 30% last Sunday over the same time last year.  We might even find ourselves in a growth posture this summer and as we look forward to getting into our building.

One last thing . . . because of the crowds we need for at least 75 of you to start sitting in what we lovingly call the “Mosh Pit” down front.  As long as you are not right in front of the speakers they are really good seats.  If you would be willing to do this you would be freeing up more space in the center section for late arriving guests.  Who knows some of them might hear the gospel more clearly because of it and your willingness to change a small habit would pay big dividends for the Kingdom!

You all are an awesome church!

Jim

Whenever someone speaks of the “nuts and bolts” of something, they are usually referring to those things that are basic, foundational. Dig a little deeper and you discover that nuts and bolts are really classified as “fasteners.” They hold things together. Paul Basden and Jim Johnson are delivering a five part message series entitled Nuts and Bolts of Prayer. Each week they unpack some of the most basic understandings of prayer, truths that hold together our belief that prayer is a powerful tool for effective living.
