7729
Six years ago our family spent a week together
in London. One of our surprises was the huge number of British
teenagers who kept looking down at their cell phones all the
time – not talking
on them, but looking at them. They had discovered a new phenomenon
that hadn’t yet caught on in the US – text messaging.
We observed them on the subway and at restaurants as they worked
their fingers to the bone sending e-notes to friends via their
cell phones. In case you didn’t know it, we have finally
caught up with our friends across the Atlantic. Text-messaging
is all the rage these days.
That reality led our church staff to a title
for the upcoming message series in July. The series will focus
on how to connect to God any time through prayer, so we named
it 7729. (Look at those numbers on your cell phone and you’ll
get it.)
For this series to be of maximum help, it
would be great if you would let us know what and how you are
praying these days. That’s
why I am asking you to send some of your prayers to us – anonymously – so
we can understand what you say when you connect to God.
Last week I mentioned in Trail Notes that
you can send your anonymous prayers to a new website we have
set up for this purpose. It’s www.7729.org.
Many of you have already responded. Whoever you are … thank
you. Your prayers came right from your heart.
But don’t stop now. If you have already sent in a prayer,
send in some more. If you haven’t done so yet, you can log
on today and write in a prayer that you’re praying. These
requests will help me customize my messages for our people.
Here is the lineup for the new series entitled “7729.
Connecting to God. Whenever.”
July 1 Pray when you’re
happy
July 8 Pray when you’re
afraid
July 15 Pray when you’re
guilty
July 22 Pray when you’re
lonely
I hope you will join us for this practical study of how to pray
so God hears.
One more thing: Jim concludes his excellent
series on parenting this Sunday June 24 with a message on “The Board of Education.” It
promises to be a great talk on how to discipline your children
in love and firmness.
Hoping your summer is filled with God’s
presence at every turn,
Paul Basden, senior pastor
