“What
Do I Tell My Kids?”
Nobody prepares you for children. No one can. Period.
It is one of life’s strangest ironies that the biggest challenge
we ever face – how to raise children to be mature and responsible
adults one day – has no advanced training course. Every parent
knows the meaning of “winging it” … that is,
doing the best you can at the moment, and hoping it’s good
enough.
I remember how unprepared I felt when Kari,
our oldest, was born 25 years ago. I didn’t know how to
change a diaper, burp a baby, or calm a crying newborn. I was
lost.
But I went from the frying pan to the fire
when she got old enough to ask me questions – like “Where do babies come from?
What is in the tall bottle that your friend Chris is drinking and
can I have some too? Why does Amy have two daddies? Why does that
man have a blue picture on his arm?” And she never stopped
asking. Kristen was the same way.
I wish someone had prepared me a little better
for that barrage of questions …
If you have ever felt the same way, I have
good news for you: over the next five Sundays Jim and I will
be bringing you messages on some of the most pressing questions
that kids are asking parents these days. That’s right – we’ve lost our minds.
We’re actually going where angels fear to tread by telling
you how we understand God’s will on some very serious questions.
Wanna know the rundown? Here it is.
July 9 What
Do I Tell My Kids about SEX?
July 16 What
Do I Tell My Kids about DRINKING?
July 23 What
Do I Tell My Kids about DIVORCE?
July 30 What
Do I Tell My Kids about TATTOOS AND PIERCINGS?
August 6 What
Do I Tell My Kids about DINOSAURS?
Some of these topics may be more relevant
than others because of the age of your children. But I guarantee
you that all of these are issues that kids are talking about
at school and in the neighborhood. And you need to have a response
when they come to you with their questions. That’s why we’re
doing this series.
We invite you to do three things to make this
the best series we’ve ever had at PTCC:
- Pray for Jim and me as we study and prepare
our messages. These topics have many sides and viewpoints,
and Christians do not always agree on what God wants. And in
some cases, the Bible is dead silent on the topic … but
quite loud on a principle that can guide us. So pray that we
will be sensitive to God.
- Ask God to open your heart to hear what He is saying to you
on each of these messages. On some of these subjects, I have
changed my mind over the years. Is it possible that you need
to do the same?
- Invite a friend to join you at these services. Think of someone
who may be struggling with these very questions, and give him
or her a firsthand invitation to meet you for the service. You
may even want to eat lunch with them afterwards so you can discuss
the message in more detail.
Jim and I continue to try as hard as we can,
through God’s
strength, to be the most truth-telling and grace-giving teachers
we can be. I believe He will honor that desire, and you will be
the beneficiary. That’s why the work we do is often called “service” – we
want to serve you with God’s truth and grace. May He grant
all of us that desire.
See you Sunday,
Paul Basden, senior pastor
PS – Thank you for giving so generously this past holiday
weekend. We made good strides in catching up where we had fallen
behind recently in our church finances. But the call to faithful
giving all summer long is not over – we still need generous
offerings the next two Sundays to fully recover from our atypical
offerings in May and June. Keep up the good work!
