Night Out
Let’s test your t.v. jingle intelligence
quotient (is that a contradiction in terms?).
Making your way in the world today takes everything you've got.
Taking a break from all your worries, sure would help a lot.
Wouldn't you like to get away?
Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody knows your name,
and they're always glad you came.
You wanna be where you can see,
our troubles are all the same
You wanna be where everybody knows your name.
Do you recognize it? If you guessed Cheers, then you watched entirely
too much television in the 1980’s! Cheers was a popular American
situation comedy that was set in a cozy bar in Boston, where a
group of locals met to share their experiences and lives with each
other. Cheers eventually became a highly rated television show
in the United States, including one season at #1. My favorite character
was Don the plumber (not that I ever watched the show or anything).
Just how important is it to know others and be known? According
to research (American Sociological Review), the average person
has 1/3 fewer friends and confidants than 20 years ago - a sign
that people may be living lonelier, more isolated lives than in
the past. I wonder if that is what the psalmist was thinking and
feeling in the beginning of Psalm 139? Perhaps he was feeling a
bit scrutinized by God. Perhaps he was worried that if God knew
everything about him—sins and all—God could not possibly
love him. Maybe God would reject him.
It is clear from reading this psalm that God
did seem to know every last detail about the poet. God knew when
he sat down and when he got up. The psalmist says that God even
knew what the psalmist was going to say before he even said it.
Before a word was even on his tongue—God knew it. I’d
say God knows us pretty well.
If you’ve been around Preston Trail Community Church for
at least six months, you’ve noticed that the number of people
who attend has more than doubled since December 2006. Chances are
pretty good that there are a few hundred people attending PTCC
that you don’t know. Here’s one way that you can change
that!
Everyone who attends PTCC is encouraged to join the fun at the
PTCC NIGHT OUT on Sunday, July 29 from 5:00-8:00 PM at the Lakes
Tennis Academy (4000 Legacy Drive in Frisco). Nick Johnson, owner
and academy director of the Lakes Tennis Academy, is a partner
of PTCC and is graciously providing his great facility for us to
have this as a private event!
The evening will include catered food & drinks, lots of fun
(Lifeguard-monitored swimming, tennis, inflatables, & games
to name a few), and great fellowship! The cost is $5 per person,
$15 max per family. No advance tickets sold. Just pay at the door.
All you will need to bring is your swimsuit and floaties, as well
as a tennis racquet for all the Wimbledon wanna-be’s. Changing
rooms are available.
Join us on July 29th at 5:00 PM and meet some new friends from
PTCC!
Where everybody wants to know your name!
