Giving
Your Life Away
“Whoever wishes to be great among you must
be your servant, and whoever desires to be first among you must
be your slave – just
as the Son of Man came not to be waited on but to serve, and to
give His life as a ransom for many [the price paid to set them
free].” Matthew 20:26-28 (Amplified Bible)
Have you ever
noticed that some of the best conversations happen when you least
expect it? Oftentimes, we feel the need to “schedule” some
conversation, making sure that we are mentally prepared. Now trust
me, I believe that there are times when this is exactly what is
needed, yet I wonder… how many opportunities for great conversation
have come and gone merely because we were not living fully present,
with eyes wide open?
I grew up in the country (urbanites call it “rural”,
rednecks call it the “country”). The nearest town had
an expanding population of approximately 150 people. The town was
primarily comprised of senior adults, many of whom were widowed.
When I was young I spent my summers riding my bicycle around town
and visiting many of these fine folks. I was often treated to fresh
cookies and milk at most of my “stops”. It felt as
though I had many grandparents in my life. Times are different
now, aren’t they? I wouldn’t think of letting my children
do what I did growing up out of concern for their safety.
My favorite (daily) stop was at my Granny
and PawPaw’s house.
My father’s parents lived just ½ mile away from my
home. I had a special relationship with my grandparents. I probably
spent more time there than I did at my own home. Some of my favorite
memories are joining my grandfather picking vegetables in his garden,
helping Granny gather eggs from the chicken coop, feeding the livestock,
riding the tractor in the cornfield, taking frequent breaks with
them on the swing under the giant tree with a glass of lemonade,
etc… You name it – it was a young boy’s playground!
My fondest memories, however, were in joining my grandparents
in their daily distribution of fresh vegetables and eggs to the
local widows and widowers in town (the same people who filled my
tummy with cookies and milk!). I remember asking my grandparents
one day why they gave so much away. Their response made a lasting
impression. They told me that the Lord had been good to them and
in turn it was their privilege to be good to others. It struck
me years later that their attitude of service never seemed compulsory
but rather delightful. They found great satisfaction in serving
others. This world needs more people like Granny and PawPaw.
I may not have a garden with which to share
with others, but I have been blessed with many other gifts that
I can give away – the
gift of time, kindness, service, hope… that’s the
beauty with being a Christian. It’s a privilege to serve.
Everyone who attends Preston Trail has the great privilege of joining
together in serving because it’s a delight to serve.
