Letters
from God
My daughter Kari is teaching first grade in
Frisco this year. She's
worn out at the end of every day, because this is her first year
to teach in public schools and she hasn't gotten her "sea
legs" under her yet. But she's a natural. (As I have
often said, she has all of Denise's virtues and few of my vices.)
At any rate, Kari's first graders write her notes every day. Today
she received one that said, "You are way nicer then my old
techer." The spelling may be suspect, but the message
is clear: this little kid thinks my daughter is great!
I like to get those kinds of letters, don’t you? Letters
that make me feel special, like I am important, like I am ... loved,
I guess.
God knows we need to receive messages like
that, so guess what He did? He sent us a bunch of letters! Seriously
-- there are 21 letters in the New Testament. They all come from
God. And in every one of them, God sends us a message that we
need to hear.
For example ...
Whenever trouble comes your way, let it
be an opportunity for joy. For when your faith is tested, your endurance
has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance
is fully developed, you will be strong in character and ready
for anything. (James 1:2-4)
And the Holy Spirit helps us in our distress.
For we don't even know what we should pray for, nor how we
should pray. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings
that cannot be expressed in words. (Romans 8:26)
Fathers, don't make your children angry
by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline
and instruction approved by the Lord. (Ephesians 6:4)
Live wisely among those who are not Christians,
and make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation
be gracious and effective so that you will have the right answer
for everyone. (Colossians
4:5-6).
But whatever I am now, it is all because
God poured out his special favor on me – and not without results … yet
it was not I but God who was working through me by his grace.
(1 Corinthians 15:10)
God wants to say many things to you through
His letters. I
encourage you to get out your Bible this evening, open it up to
the New Testament, turn to some of the letters, and begin reading. If
you listen with your heart, you will hear what God want you to
hear. It really is that simple ...
Enjoy those letters,
Paul Basden, senior pastor
