Children
and Prayer
Jesus talked a lot about kids and prayer.
Here’s what he
said …
One day some children ran up to Jesus, but
his followers tried to “protect” him from the intrusion. Jesus corrected
them: “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them!” (Matthew
19:14) He clearly cared for little ones and longed to show them
his Father’s love.
On another occasion the disciples asked Jesus
to teach them to pray. Jesus did … and one of the things he told them was
that “everyone who asks receives.” (Luke 11:16)
So we know two things for certain: Jesus loves children, and he
wants us to pray. Add those together and here is what you get:
Jesus wants us to pray for children. Today I invite you to pray
for three children who belong to the PTCC family.
First is Nash Horton, son of Jace and Melanie. Nash
came into this world on August 11, eleven weeks premature, after
Melanie had been confined to a hospital room for four weeks due
to serious pregnancy problems. Since his birth, Nash has been in
NICU, and mom and dad have been required to go to the hospital
to see their newborn. They are happy to report that their son has
grown from 4 pounds 11 ounces to 6 pounds 13 ounces. If that keeps
up, they may be able to bring him home within a week. Jace and
Melanie have said that they could not have survived this whole
ordeal apart from the love and support of their Life Group. Remember
to pray for the normal, healthy development of Nash.
Next is Keira Noel Padgett. Keira was born
several weeks premature this past Monday, September 18, to Rod
and Jamie. About a month ago Jamie’s physician sent her
home for bed-rest until it was time for delivery. Since then
Rod has played Mr. Mom, while folks in the PTCC worship ministry
have provided meals. Keira Noel came home from the hospital today.
She needs our prayers for continued growth into full health.
Finally we come to Andrew Young, three year-old
son of Chris and Kim. Andrew was born with a major heart problem.
This past Tuesday he underwent his fourth and final surgery to
correct that problem. He and his family are at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston.
The surgery lasted 8 hours, then Andrew went to ICU for the next
36 hours. Today he will be moved into a private room. Kim and Chris,
who have been sustained by the prayers and love of their Life Group,
ask us to pray that Andrew’s heart will continue to heal
well and that he will avoid any infections while he’s in
the hospital the next two weeks.
Prayer is a privilege. It connects us to the very heart of God.
It puts us into contact with the purpose and power behind the universe.
Praying for children is a double privilege – it allows us
to talk to God about those who are weak and vulnerable and impressionable,
and to intercede on their behalf. Praying for kids is truly doing
for them one more thing that they can’t do for themselves.
So join me in praying for Nash, Keira Noel, and Andrew.
I’m confident that God will hear our
prayers …
