Katrina Update 2

As you know we have been involved with other churches in responding to the needs of those affected by hurricane Katrina. Below is a letter from John Shapiro of Stonebriar Community Church outlining the progress of our efforts and how churches and individuals can help:

It has been great to see the body of Christ mobilize to minister to people in need following Hurricane Katrina.  Because the situation has been so demanding, we have been unable to keep you apprised of an exciting ministry unfolding in our own backyard.  After you’ve finished reading this letter, it is my hope that you will: (1) refer those seeking hurricane assistance from your church to the new Hurricane Relief Center here in Frisco and (2) join us in this ministry.

We’ve secured 3,300 sq. ft. of retail and warehouse space in Frisco from which to run hurricane relief efforts. Thanks to the generosity of Preston/Wade Self-Storage and the Main Street Storage Center, we will be able to meet the ongoing needs of those impacted by Hurricane Katrina for the next six months, rent free.  Over the last three days alone, this new Hurricane Relief Center has served dozens of guests displaced by Katrina.

Looking forward, the Hurricane Relief Center (8749 Wade Blvd., just a block north of Stonebriar Community Church off Preston Road) will begin to hold regular hours as follows:

Every Wednesday from noon to 8:00 p.m. donations will be accepted, beginning tomorrow.  Over Labor Day weekend, we collected and sorted about 20 tons of essential supplies-this got us started.  In response to immediate needs out of state, we shipped about six tons to Mississippi.  Thus, we again have some specific needs.  These items can be found at www.Stonebriar.org

The Hurricane Relief Center will be open to serve the needs of evacuees on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. -4 p.m., beginning this Friday.

Finally, on Thursdays, we will deliver requested supplies to the various evacuee camps around the Metroxplex from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

You can join us in this work as follows:

1.      We desire to operate based primarily on referrals from local churches and local church members.  Consider referring evacuees to the Hurricane Relief Center.  By doing so, you can be assured that every person seeking assistance has both physical and spiritual needs addressed.  We will pray for everyone coming in (and share the Gospel as appropriate) and make sure they leave with a Bible.  Practically speaking, we will also be able to make sure that folks are not “working the circuit,” hitting up each individual church for support. On the application there is a referral box that enables us to notify you for follow up.

2.   Consider mobilizing your congregation to provide needed items (check www.Stonebriar.org).

3.   Consider providing volunteers to man the Hurricane Relief Center.

As always, www.Stonebriar.org is the best source of information regarding the Hurricane Relief Center…updates, volunteer opportunities, and items needed for donation are just a few of the many things you can expect to find there. If you are interested in joining us, please contact me at 469-252-5354 or by email at johns@stonebriar.org.

At PTCC we have a kingdom-size vision and believe God’s best work is done when churches work together for his purposes. This is an outstanding opportunity for you and our church to make a difference!
